Our Projects

Green Hearts

Welcome to Green Hearts, an exciting new project we deliver at Douglas Eyre Sports Centre, to improve the lives of the local community by providing access for informal walking, jogging and running. We want to give local people the opportunity to exercise on their own terms in a safe and quiet green space to improve their physical and mental health. Playing fields are traditionally used by sports club members but this project opens up the playing field to the whole community to encourage them to exercise on a regular basis.

A mile-long Green Hearts path has been marked out with quarter mile posts around the perimeter of the field so that participants can track the distance they travel and monitor their own improvement. The path can be used each day during daylight hours, it is FREE to take part and all abilities are welcome. Participants can exercise at their own pace, at a time that suits them and no special equipment or clothing is required.

Our Saturday morning Welcome sessions led by Green Hearts Activator John Harkin are a great way to help you get started and build your confidence to be active more regularly. The next session will take place on Saturday 17th March from 9.00-10.00am.

With the arrival of the longer evenings we hope to encourage more people to start using the Green Hearts path and have organised monthly Saturday morning events to welcome new members and returners to the playing field:

24th March – Spring into Action – with the clocks going forward this weekend Spring is finally on the way, let it inspire you to exercise more outdoors. (9.00-10.30am)

21st April – Bring a friend – register with a friend or family member & you will both receive a free Green Hearts gift. (9.00-10.30am)

19th May – Mindfulness workshop – join us for a one hour workshop at 10am followed by a Green Hearts walk

If you would like more information about the project then you can drop in and meet us at The Mill on Coppermill Lane from 11.00am – 1.00pm on the following dates. We will be handing out registration forms and flyers in the lobby and then at 1.00pm we will lead a short walk from The Mill to Douglas Eyre Sports Centre and around the Green Hearts path.
