We believe that playing fields are the green hearts of the community, providing a local outdoor space in which people can be physically active.
Green Hearts is the exciting new project we are piloting in Walthamstow to improve the lives of the local community by providing access to Douglas Eyre Sports Centre for informal walking, jogging and running. The aim of project is to encourage people who are inactive to exercise on their own terms in a safe and quiet green space in order to improve their physical and mental health. Playing fields are traditionally used by sports club members for organised matches but this project will open up the playing field to the whole community and encourage them to exercise on a regular basis.
A mile-long Green Hearts path has been marked out with quarter mile posts around the perimeter of the field to help participants to gauge the distance they have travelled. Each participant will keep a record of the distance so that they can monitor their own improvement. Encouragement and support will be given and regular health related workshops will be available.
The playing field will be open each day from 8.30am - 4.00pm for participants to use the path and all abilities are welcome. Opening hours will be extended to 7.00pm during the summer.
