London Playing Field Playing Field Greenwich kicks off the new season

1,400 young footballers descended on LMPF Greenwich on the weekend of 13th and 14th September for the traditional season curtain raiser tournaments. Spread over two days 120 teams took part in small sided games with Under 7 and 8’s playing 5-a-side, Under 9 and 10's playing 7-a-side and Under 11 and Under 12's playing 9-a-side in line with the FA Youth Development Review.

The whole event was organised in association with the Selkent League, the largest youth league in south east England which on a weekly basis provides football for 11,000 young players. The League, which is run on child friendly principles, uses LMPF Greenwich as a central venue for small sided football and the atmosphere created at these big tournaments is always very special.

Sally Dolan, Secretary of the Selkent League said “The LPFF tournament weekend in early September is always a highlight and a great way to launch our season. For some of the youngest players it is their first experience of organised football and to see the excitement etched on their young faces is deeply rewarding. Having ignited their love for the game our job is to sustain it and create a sporting habit for life.”
The winning teams were:
Under 7's      Junior Reds
Under 8's      Crown Stars
Under 9s       AFC All Stars Lions
Under 10's     Aspire Dulwich Hamlet
Under 11's     Phoenix Jaguars
Under 11's     Marathon Lions
Under 12's     AFC All Stars

We would like to convey our best wishes to all our teams and clubs for the forthcoming season and to congratulate all those unsung volunteers who do such a brilliant job in supporting grass roots sport in London.
