Just for keeps

Anonymous 11 March 2016

One of the prizes in our 2015 Gala Dinner silent auction was “Just for Keeps” – a personal goalkeeping session with leading specialist coach Alex Welsh. Alex is a part-time goalkeeping coach at Tottenham Hotspur Academy and a Lead Tutor for The FA. He has written two books on the subject and provided a series of DVD’s.

The prize was donated by the winning bidder to Radley College so on 10th March Alex delivered a session to keepers from the Junior Colts, Colts and Seniors year groups. The pupils were put through their paces with a number of practices focusing on being successful in 1 v 1 situations and dealing with high crosses. The boys had a great time and felt the session had really improved them as goalkeepers. Alex provided a signed copy of The Soccer Goalkeeping Handbook for the college library.

He said “I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon working with a group of talented and well-motivated young goalkeepers. They trained with huge enthusiasm and took on board a great deal in a relatively short period of time. It was also wonderful to see games of football being played on every one of the college’s beautifully maintained pitches – definitely a case of playing fields improving lives.

The prize was one of a number of exclusive experiences available to bid for at the Gala Dinner, including a day’s training at the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, a training experience with Arsenal Ladies and a training experience with Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock.
