Green Hearts gets off to a flying start

Anonymous 04 October 2017

Our Green Hearts project, supported by St James Big Local, was officially launched on Saturday 30th September at Douglas Eyre Sports Centre with a special visit from Clare Coghill, Leader of Waltham Forest Council and LPFF Trustee Colin Ainger.

The launch provided a fantastic opportunity for us to invite local residents to meet staff, sign up to the initiative and walk or jog the mile-long path around the ground. Those participants who completed the mile were rewarded with a special Green Hearts pedometer donated by local estate agents The Stow Brothers. We also provided other activities such as footgolf, hoopla and speed cup stacking for younger members of the community, which they certainly seemed to enjoy.

Alex Welsh, LPFF Chief Executive who escorted Cllr Coghill around the path said “This is a great example of how playing fields can be more relevant to local communities and play a key role in enriching and extending lives. To have 73 participants signed up is a marvellous achievement in such a short space of time“.

Colin Ainger said “Listening to the participants there was no doubt that they had enjoyed themselves and realised the health benefits Green Hearts could bring them. For some this was their first opportunity to take part in physical exercise in a safe, friendly environment.”

The aim of the project is to improve the lives of local communities by opening up access to playing fields for informal walking, jogging and running and it was great to see so many neighbours visit us to enjoy the green space and fresh air.
